When it comes to classical music, serialism isn't the first thing that comes to the mind of the average person. This vibraphone and flute duet called "Winds" is written with that 20th century serial style using all twelve pitches of the chromatic scale. Put into rows called tone-rows this type of composition treats all notes equally regardless of how pleasant the harmony may be. For many this type of music hardly seems musical as our ears are more accustomed to harmonies that favor consonance rather than dissonance. However, serial composition is a mathematical way of writing that can add a certain expression you can't get otherwise.
